Crystal oscillators are active electronics components which can generate high stable frequency clock signal in the ppm(part per million) level.A crystal oscillator in general consists of a quartz crystal resonator,an IC and some additional passive components.
Crystals
Quartz crystals are passive electronics components which are primarily used as resonators from sub-MHz to up to a few
hundred MHz's with high stability and Q (quality factor). Quartz crystals are key piezoelectric components in electronic frequency generation and control devices/subsystems for signal timing and synchronization.
VCXO
VCXO clock generators are used in many areas such as digital TV, modems, transmitters and computers. Design parameters
for a VCXO clock generator are tuning voltage range, center frequency, frequency tuning range and the timing jitter of the output signal. Jitter is a form of phase noise that must be minimised in applications such as radio receivers, transmitters and measuring equipment.
Ceramic Resonator
A ceramic resonator is an electronic component that when combined with other appropriate components, can produce oscillations at a specific frequency. Ceramic resonators are made of high-stability piezoelectric ceramics, which functions as a mechanical resonator. When voltage is applied, its piezoelectric "vibration behavior" causes an oscillating signal. The thickness of the ceramic substrate determines the resonance frequency of the device.
TCXO
Temperature compensated crystal oscillators are essentially crystal oscillators which are tuned over
temperature by a network in such a manner as to compensate for the natural temperature drift of the uncompensated crystal oscillator.
